Power Distribution Unit (PDU'S)
To Operate every electronics' device we need a power supply socket which can match the plug and capacity of electronic device. But, when we want to connect multiple electronic devices at a same time in same place there will be a requirement of Power Distribution Unit of a good quality and Capacity. So, a Power Supply Distribution unit plays a very key role in some of the critical and important infrastructure. Power Supply Unit- (PDU'S) take power source from a single point and divide them to different devices in balanced way an balancing the load. Power Supply Units are specially used in critical infrastructure's such as a Network Server Rack, Server Rack, Video Walls, Network hubs, Telecom Rack etc. Power Supply Rack helps us to reduce the number of cables in a server cabinet and they are also easily accommodated with the server rack by there dimensional and design features. Power Supply Plays vital role in unbalancing the power and supplying spark free balanced power supply to the connected device. Depending on the feature, models and brand PDU are available in different types, varieties of Power Socket Ports, Front or a Reverse PDU etc.
Understanding Different Types of Power Supply Unit's PDU
Depending on the accommodation style of PDU they are divided into different types. A PDU is installed in many ways to make easier and fast installation as well as in different positions. Depending on the installation position PDU are divided into different types:
Vertical Power Supply Unit: Vertical Power Supply Units are designed to install them in verticality are ideal to use on the rear of the Network Rack they are fitted in 0 U it means that the rack space is left available for critical rack mount equipment.
Horizontal Power Supply Unit : Horizontal power supply units are fitted with 19" Frame in a Network Rack. They are manufactured in 6 to 12 Units Power Sockets and Frame. They are fitted with Cage Knots and L Type Screws.
Different Types of Power Distribution Unit:
Depending on the different types of servers, storage devices & network rack equipment's. Power Distribution Units are designed and manufactured to meet the different application and scenarios. Here we have mentioned different types of PDU available with us.
- Basic PDU's: a basic PDU is built with simple power socket which can be plugged in and receive the power immediately in simple way. Simple fuse or circuit breaker is provided in basic PDU. They can also be available on surge/spike and EMC/EMI protection features. A basic PDU can only deliver one or more branch circuits depending on the design by manufacturer for example: A,B & C Circuits.
- Metered PDU's:By word we can understand that a metered PDU can make the measurement of load connected on it. Depending on the feature we can get the overall and individual power consumption. Voltage, Ampere Drawn from different sockets, energy usage (kWh) and power factor (pF) are included on the information delivered. These information are available on a smart LED/LCD built-into PDU or through an HTTP/HTTPS IP connectivity.
- Switched PDU's : Switched PDU can be controlled from software they allow connected loads to be rebooted for power cycling or isolated for maintenance or upgrade purpose. These switch are designed with circuit breaker to provide an On/OF functionality at PDU physical Level or more smartly switching at the individual outlet socket management level.
- Metered & Switched PDU's : metered and combined PDUS are more smartly controlled PDUS through a electronic switching board with network management port. It's load calculation can be observed from switching level in software. They are widely used in Data Centers, Telecom & Power Distribution Centers etc.
- Intelligent PDU's : Intelligent PDU's are the versatile combination of electronic and software based Power Distribution Unit widely used in data Centre applications. Operated through SNMP communication protocol connection to a data centre infrastructure management package they provide very balanced power to the devices and can be monitored in software and can also be managed the output as per requirements. They can also be used for managing the different types of sensors for temperature monitoring, humidity control, access control management for a server cabinet. They are linked with varieties of smart switches and Smart PDU so that the management team can access them from a remote location, identify load issues such as under-utilized servers, thermal hot spots within cabinets and help to balance the required load, make planning for capacity of devices, equipment's layouts etc.
